Beneath the Shell
About this Work
Shell Study is a tactile terracotta relief panel celebrating protection, resilience, and maritime geometry. Inspired by the protective spiral of nautilus shells, the sculpture displays spiraling chambers hand-carved in high relief. The artist spent days carving the smooth, sweeping segments and adding micro-textures to the borders to create visual contrast. The piece represents structural perfection in nature and the passage of time, as shell chambers grow sequentially. By bringing a fossil-like fragment of nature into a gallery setting, Shell Study encourages viewers to pause and appreciate the quiet mathematics of the earth. The light terracotta clay catches raking light beautifully, emphasizing the depth of the carved reliefs.
