About this Work
Inner Sentinel stands as a monumental hand-built sculpture symbolizing guardianship, memory, and emotional shielding. Carved from native clay, the towering structure features vertical mask contours and protective shield patterns inspired by traditional tribal iconography. The artist built the sentinel using coiling and slab techniques over several sessions, letting the clay partially dry to support the massive structure's weight. The deep carvings represent the scars of experience, while the hollow core suggests space for introspection and growth. As a sentinel, the piece invites viewers to examine their own protective walls, asking what we guard and why. The warm, mineral ochre slips applied to the surface add visual depth, capturing natural light to highlight the hand-carved textures.
