Narasimha
Artist Profile
About this Work
Narasimha draws inspiration from one of the most powerful episodes in Vedic and Puranic mythology—the cosmic encounter between Lord Narasimha and Lord Sharabha. According to sacred texts, after Lord Narasimha defeated the demon king Hiranyakashipu, his immense divine fury threatened the balance of the universe. To restore harmony, Lord Shiva manifested as Sharabha, a majestic being embodying the combined attributes of a bird, lion, and human. This formidable form appeared not to conquer, but to pacify and restore cosmic equilibrium.
The sculpture captures this climactic moment with remarkable intensity. At its base stands the lion-man incarnation of Lord Vishnu in a moment of divine restraint, while the towering figure of Sharabha rises above with expansive wings, a powerful avian profile, and sacred attributes including the Trishul and sword. The dynamic composition conveys the transition from overwhelming power to ultimate peace, symbolizing the triumph of balance over chaos.
What distinguishes this work is its innovative use of layered corrugated cardboard as the primary medium. Through meticulous engineering and craftsmanship, the artist transforms an everyday material into a monumental sculptural form. The exposed corrugation is deliberately arranged to create the intricate texture of feathers, musculature, and ornamental details, while carefully layered construction provides exceptional structural depth and stability. The result is a fusion of mythology, sustainability, and contemporary sculptural practice, demonstrating how humble materials can be elevated into works of profound artistic and spiritual significance.
